Rural bliss is a dream for many right now, especially when it comes in the form of swathes of rolling farmland, forest tracks and trails, accommodation that’ll knock your socks off and enough space for you and the kids to run wild. With SA’s Covid-19 lockdown period now only set to ease by a sliver, most of us need to keep the dream of this kind of freedom alive. While patience has become the name of the game, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, you too can experience the freedom and rejuvenation that Oakhurst offers all of its guests.
But what really makes Oakhurst Farm Cottages the ultimate bolthole for a spot of family downtime? Well, it’s a combination of things. From the minute one arrives here, you’re made to feel welcome by the the Oakhurst team. The accommodation which comes in a number of forms, is creative and unique, the activities on the farm for young and old, are on tap and easy to get stuck into, and the extra attention to detail and comfort…well, that’s just the cherry on top!
Let’s delve into the accommodation on the farm. The historic Oakhurst Forge, a thick-walled stone blacksmith’s forge, over a century old and today a gorgeous two bedroom abode, oozes in classic style, with soothing views onto the nearby forest from the covered deck and living area. A real winner for couples.
Moving along to The Five Farm Cottages, these are perfectly suited to groups or families wanting to be within easy reach of each other. These have three bedrooms, outdoor covered decks and are within stone’s throw of the forest edge and the kids play area…what more could you want?
The Schoolyard is the newest addition to the Oakhurst platter. These three semi detached units were once classrooms for the farm’s school kids. Like any farm schoolyard, there is still loads of flat lawn around the place, and those gorgeous views out over the Outeniqua Mountains from the patio’s are gobsmacking.
Whether you’re here to put your feet up and keep them there, or you’re hankering to get stuck into the tracks and trails on the farm, the 16km of well-marked forest single track, designed with mountain bikers, trail runners and kids in mind, should keep the endorphins in check. There are also some great short walks and hikes, a popular one heading down to the Klein Keurbooms waterfalls near The Forge. If that’s not enough, take to the farm on horse back, the guided rides are a fantastic way to explore Oakhurst and are tailored to the age and experience of the rider. If you’ve got little kids in tow, a visit to the Oakhurst dairy to watch the cows being milked is a must, as is a spot of fishing on the farm dam or even some archery.
After all this action, the thought of preparing dinner may be the last thing on your mind. The Oakhurst farm meals, Great-Griller Braai Baskets and Sunrise Breakfast Baskets are made to order, and packed with scrumptious farm produce and home made treats, plus they’re delivered right to your front door. If that’s not enough and you’re after some essentials, take a stroll over to our cute little farm shop, jam-packed with handmade treats, toys, collectables and even a few farm-inspired décor items.
Now if all of this hasn’t whet your appetite for a jaunt to this hidden Garden Route gem, then nothing will. So keep the bags on standby and at the ready, we might not know yet when we’ll be released from the clutches of Corona lockdown, but bet’s are that once we’re gained some sort of freedom to travel, a night or two at Oakhurst Farm Cottages may be exactly what the doctor orders.
