OAKHURST MEAL BASKETS – A HIT ON ALL FRONTS
For many it’s the fact that they’re just downright delicious. For others (moms especially) there’s something about not having to deal with catering and meals which makes a holiday feel like it should. For us it’s the chance of sharing some of the area’s best home-grown food, creatively packaged in each basket we make up.

KEEPING IT REAL
Wherever possible, we’ve made every effort to source as much content for each Oakhurst basket locally. Now, for anyone who’s grown their own veggies for instance, you’ll know that producing the perfect crop, year round isn’t always possible. We do however give it a good go, and one thing’s for certain, we’ll make sure that a fair amount of your basket’s content comes from the surrounding area, no matter the time of year.
LET’S DO BREAKFAST
It was the birth of our Sunrise Breakfast Basket that got the ball rolling on the guest hamper idea at Oakhurst. Nothing beats waking up in your cottage, opening the front door and there it sits, perfectly packed and ready for you to dig in to. Central to the make up of the Breakfast Basket is scrumptious farm bacon and sausages from nearby Charlesford Farm and of course our very own fresh farm eggs, straight from the Oakhurst chicken coop. Cheese and butter are from the well-know Lancewood Farm, just down the road, and of course you can’t have your crunchy muesli without a good dose of fresh milk from the Oakhurst dairy. Orange juice, ground coffee and tea are shop purchased, while the english muffins are baked by a small bakery in George.
No breakfast basket would be complete without a pack of home-made rusks. These rusks are lovingly made by Claire Crowther’s mum. While that recipe is kept well-guarded and secret, these rusks are the best you’ll find south of the equator, guaranteed!

NOU GAAN ONS BRAAI
With breakfast taken care of and proving to be a hit amongst guests, it seemed a natural progression to move towards what could be used for either lunch or dinner. Onto the menu came the suitably named, Great Griller Braai Basket. Here we needed something which was going to satisfy a rather particular market. South African’s take their braaing seriously, and the Great Griller needs to tick all the boxes when it comes to a complete package. The assortment of braai meat comes from local butcher, Hartman and Sons in George. Perfect cuts and expert prepped, this “old school” butchery produce meat products fit for the braai connoisseur. Green salads and seasonal root veg are sourced from the Oakhurst veggie garden wherever possible. Garlic bread comes from the local bakery in George and to top it off, we’ve thrown in a few delicious garlic butter potatoes. What a feast.
Now, what about the fire? To make your Oakhurst braai 100% authentic, pick up a bag or two of our firewood from the Oakhurst Farm Shop. Our wood is part of an ongoing alien vegetation clearing project, which means your coals are contributing towards a worthy cause. (find out more here).

TIME TO GET CREATIVE – DIY BUILD-A-BURGER
Now who doesn’t love a good burger? There’s something really social about building your own burger with the rest of the family or a bunch of friends, using a selection of super-delish ingredients. Our DIY Burger Basket comes packed with everything you’ll need for a burger evening deluxe! First step is to get the fire going so that the coals are ready to braai those homemade burger patties, made from quality meat by Hartman and Sons. Back to the box, the fresh burger rolls are sourced from a small bakery in George, while the butter comes from nearby Lancewood Farms. When possible, lettuce and tomatoes are sourced from the Oakhurst veggie garden. To top it off, we provide a tangy sauce which can be heated and poured over your burger, topped off with some sliced gherkin. Now, it’s up to you as to how you want to construct your masterpiece, but the guarantee is, it’s going to be a feast.
Finally, we include a few bottles of Steri Stumpi flavoured milk in the box, great for those with a sweet tooth. Fun Fact: Guess where the milk used in Steri Stumpi comes from? You guessed it, right here from Oakhurst Dairy Farm…we supply Parmalat with the milk used for these tasty treats.
