Oakhurst just wouldn’t be the same without our pack of much-loved pooches, each exuding their own charm and character as they make their way around the farm, often popping into a guest cottage to say hello (or more likely looking for the odd snack!). Recently, we’ve introduced three chipper little characters to the Oakhurst pack, bringing us to a grand total of seven hounds.
For the sake of this article, we’ll focus on these three new recruits, as well as where they came from, as all are rescue dogs from the the Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need shelter, an NPO focussing on outreach programmes for abandoned or abused animals. ODIN, as they’re know, is managed and run by the ever-energetic and caring Colleen Smith, who tirelessly raises funds, develops outreach projects, rehouses animals and educates communities on correct animal care. So let’s introduce you to Oakhurst’s three rescues:
Mother and pup team Vlooi and Kipper
Vlooi, despite being the mother, is a complete hooligan and shows little loyalty to anyone unless they’ve got something to offer (again, if you’ve got a snack on hand, she’ll give you a bit of her time). It doesn’t take much to see she’s learnt the tricks of the trade through life on the streets. What Vlooi lacks in manners, she makes up in character, this little dog is a real chuckle.
Kipper, the ever so prim daughter of Vlooi certainly didn’t pick up her lady-like manners from her mum. Kipper is Holly Crowther’s dog, and therefore needs to be able to get on with horses, which she does extremely well. Kipper spends afternoons hanging around at the stables and is always game to trot alongside a horse on an outside, sometimes managing more than one a day. Even Holly’s hill training isn’t too much trouble for Kipper, who charges along next to the steeds up and down the Oakhurst slopes.
Princess Maya
With the most character-packed ear tufts, Maya latched onto Anna Crowther as her one and only confidant. Little is know about Maya’s history or where she originally came from, but she is a polite and loyal member of the Oakhurst team, spending nights on Anna’s bed, curled up under her orange fleece blanket. What a life!
