2020, what a year! What started off as a bustling first few months at Oakhurst Farm Cottages, ground to a distinct half in March when SA went into Covid-19 lockdown.
The uncertainties were plentiful, but what was for sure was that guests couldn’t come to Oakhurst, bringing the demand on our accommodation and certain farming operations to a grinding halt.
Crafting a masterpiece
But for our ever-positive and energetic farm managers Hendrik and Wilna Vorster, these uncertain times brought about a spot of creative thinking.
Wilna remembered a family recipe for pies, which had been passed around her family for over 30 years. Now was the time to put this to good use. With Hendrik roped in, the couple set about perfecting and building on the family pie recipe. The result was a masterpiece!
Their kitchen soon turned into a production line. Pastry, fillings, rolling pins, baking trays and hours of hard work went into the first prototypes, which quite literally, sold like hot cakes…or should we say hot pies!
Baking a wholesome business
Fast forward a few months, and Wilna and Hendrik’s pie business is booming. It can be said with no uncertainty, that you’d have to go a long way to beat one of these tasty pasties.
The ideal snack, meal or even a kids school lunch (they fit neatly into a lunchbox), the pies are available with a range of fillings to choose from: chicken, mince, veg or venison, with more filling options soon to be rolled out.

What’s next
As life on Oakhurst get back to some level of “normality” and the cogs of our guest accommodation are turning once again, Wilna and Hendrik are baking as well as managing the farm and guest cottages, quite a handful!
The pie business continues to flourish and the pies…well, they’re as gobsmacking as ever. So get your orders in or book your stay at Oakhurst, where you’ll get to sample them on “home soil”.
Either way, these pies are perfect and the story behind them adds a good dollop of extra flavour and filling.
